Has anyone installed it yet?

Thoughts?

The repositories were totally swamped, but I managed to get some apps installed.

Package manager:
Hmm. I liked the old one better. More clicks, trickier to install multiple apps at the same time.

Suspend/Hibernate: Works SO much better. It's a LOT faster now and more stable. I can close the lid of my lappy and then reopen it with ease. No activity while it's shut.

Beyond that, I haven't had much time to tinker with it. I still have more work to do.

Probably not the right category, I'm tired & don't feel like thinking right now, lol!

Found this interesting tonight. My first distro (if you don't count freespire, lol!) was feisty fawn.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ubuntu_releases
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames <~~ really cute.

So to make a long story short, the repository servers probably love me. I couldn't get vmware running in 64 bit jaunty despite doing hacks and workarounds. I was able to get it to launch, but it kept like "not rendering properly" for lack of a better word. I don't have an nvidia graphics card on it. So...the laptop has karmic on it again and the newest version of vmware (I forget the number, don't have the lappy fired up right now). Everything is running smoothly and I'm back in action with Linux mobility and access to ie if I need it for browser testing on that machine. I still go back and forth between access and base. -- still need to figure out why the sound sucks tho. Hibernate & suspend works great now. Can shut the lid and the thing actually goes to sleep -- resumes quickly.

I don't know why they changed the package management system in ubuntu, it's really annoying to me. Too many clicks. I like the old interface better. I haven't set up any extra theming stuff besides the buuf icons and some desktop backgrounds. I did get compiz extra schtuff installed. Got samba installed and set up shares. Gotta figure out why when I transfer files back and forth I have to do a chmod 777 to unlock them. Happens with both karmic and jaunty. Kinda sucks for folders with subfolders as I haven't learned how to change permissions on all of them at once. Every now and then I do the lazy way and sudo nautilus. Embarassed

I wanted to put another distro on that machine and make it dual boot, but I guess I was too lazy.

Night everybuddy!

su - might be time start thinking about making the switch to debian. way more stable and no need to change everything every 6 months. if you can install and configure ubuntu, you can make the switch to debian work. just a suggestion....

the current stable release (lenny) is pretty sweet.

just a suggestion.....

I agree with bmc, might be time to make the switch.
Is pretty simple to install debian, is some configuring afterwords to get all the apps you want. You will have a really sweet system in no time. you could always add to it, configure it, rebuild it if needed. you wont have to re-install every 6 months....you are a perfect candidate for debian, I think you will be happier if you made the switch.
You know where you will get help BMC I can even help sometimes, I am more useful for sabayon or gentoo issues though.
I will be more useful when I figure out what the difference is between a linux command and a package manager command.
sheesh, so much to learn Smile

Well, for now I'm just gonna stick with the buntu system on the lappy. Everything is configured now. I just don't have the time to reinstall the dang thing at the moment. I definitely will take Debian into consideration for future projects though. I really would like to learn LAMP at some point too. Debian would be a beautiful distro to do it on.

Leaf has been talking about installing a server on my old pc for several months now. At some point I think I'm going to steal that machine back and turn it into a web server play project. (shhh) lol! Very Happy
