Yes I did. Funny with the economy in the tank, no one wants to spend money or do not have money to spend.
I feel blessed that my bills are paid and got a little in savings. My wife and I were going to spend about $100 each on ourselves, and be happy
With out expecting it,My employer gave me a new sawzall that I really needed as mine was worn out, a $2 per hour raise, and a $900 Christmas bonus.
So, Mrs. CG got a new electric frypan, a computer game and a few cheap dvd movies.
I got some underwear and a couple pair of work jeans, and a used nvidia video card from craigs list for $20. We are happy.
I had a lot of fun with my time off and installed a really old sabayon, and brought it back to gentoo, and then tried to update it, final word is, can't be done. First I had wrong use flags, I fixed that, bash and gcc were so old they needed to be updated but were blocking each other, I found a way around those blocked packages, with the latest portage I had more blocked packages, then it was use flags again. I now have the latest portage, gcc, python, et.. and now have massive circular dependencies.
Seems the correct way to fix them is to remove the old, so the new can be installed. But, The packages have been renamed over the years, I cant find them to remove.
If I could just get past this point....I could start the actual update, which would run for a week, and break many more packages

Dang, carpenterguy! Your employer loves you! That feels good beyond the wallet, eh.
You installed an old sabayon and tried to bring it up to a new gentoo? Now that sounds like a challenge. (forgive me if i misunderstood)
I found one of my first slackware cds from the 90s and tried to put it on a vm. Didn't work for some reason. I didn't fight it. One day when I do get some time, maybe I'll see why. It'd be neat to go 'back in time' and look see what I was playing with again- klunky old kde, xmms, the good old fluxbox with the toolbar I liked...
I did get an old m$dos and win3.2 in vm. That was kinda neat for about 5 minutes You're so right; some things never change |

welcome back Yum. We need you here Now we need to see all the others too
I'm happy everyone had a great Christmas, we need the relaxation it brings
Let's see.........Christmas was ok, I got to see my gkids, son and family a couple times, and most of my brothers and mother. I didn't get to see my sister, although she doesn't live that far away. One of my brothers is in Tucson, but I did call and talk with him ( and my sister ). I was supposed to get to see my oldest son when he came to town, but that didn't happen.
I find myself moving away from tinkering with linux for tinkering sake, and devoting more time to this experiment I'm going to do. It involves things that haven't been done before ( much ), and there is no real cut and dried approach to engineering and design, so I have to think hard and try to approach everything in a logical manner ( which is hard for me cuz I only have a few brain cells left, lol ).
I wish to do this because it's easier to do it on paper, rather than build something and then have to tear it apart and redo it. But there's limits on the planning stages too, eventually one has to do something.
Then of course, the cold weather has kept me indoors a lot, so there's that. And my natural inclination to procrastinate.
so there you have it. Wonderful to hear from everyone again ! _________________ There are 10 kinds of people in this world...those that understand binary and those that don't. |

My goal was to update sabayon 3.4 to 5.1
I help out on irc a lot, a few wonder in asking about updating their older sabayon. The standard reply is to just re-install, then they ask why.
I can now honestly tell them what they are up against.
The reason for removing the sabayon overlay, in branch 4 we moved it and is sop in 4.xx to remove and re-install it.
I cant reinstall the new overlay because of circular dependencies.
The old overlay has left so much cruft behind, why I have the circular dependencies that have since been renamed.
Yeah the older linux distros are fun, for about 5 minutes. I have one computer that was given to me, an old 1.66 cpu , 4 gig hdd, small amount of ram and a knoppix install that is about 8 years old. kde, mozilla web browser etc..
Is a slow booter, once up, actually runs pretty decent. I just keep it in a closet. Cant bring myself to recycle it since it is a linux machine.
When I do boot it, feel like I am surfing the web in a model T _________________ Not a complete idiot, some parts are missing. |

CG called me up and convinced me to go to a local lug here, and I got to meet lots of linux enthusiasts. The coffee was good too ! _________________ There are 10 kinds of people in this world...those that understand binary and those that don't. |

BTW, CG, I took some of what I have in savings and bought some silver coins, and am going to do that every month for as long as I can afford it. I'm going to check locally for a better deal pricewise though, for future purchases. Here's where I ordered it:
http://www.kitco.com/
Although you may think this is unnecessary, you might want to rethink this strategy as the bubble begins to implode. I remember about 1980, when I convinced my exwife to buy gold ( at 179.00/oz ), and then it went to 800/oz. The upside potential for silver is even more, since gold is now quite pricey for small time investors like me. But you need to think of it as insurance, so you have something to bargain with, when the food shortages start to occur, and all the other stuff connected with this upcoming disaster unfolds.
A good site to check out is ronpaul.com, he's the straightest shooting politician we have today.
I apoligize for using this site for my political views, but I just can't stand idlely by and say nothing, when I can see this disaster unfolding
be well ! _________________ There are 10 kinds of people in this world...those that understand binary and those that don't. |

Hey there Yum! What's shakin?
Hey, have any of you guys tried chrome yet? I already had it installed -- not the crossover chromium version but the dl from google.
I was having major issues with gmail lagging in FF, but with chrome it's lightning fast and scrolls smoothly. _________________ StarSunflower.com
